U-16 League Play-off:

St. Brendan's  2-11 Monivea 1-13

St. Brendans U-16s march on to County League Semi-final after defeating an excellent Monivea team in a pulsating encounter.

This was really a game of two halves (excuse the clíche).

Monivea were much the better team in the first half with their No.10 John Mullins particularly good. Monivea lead at half-time by 7 points but really the scoreline flattered St. Brendans who played poorly.

After stern words from the management team of Gus Shaughnessy, Joe Lohan and Michael Lohan at half-time, St. Brendans upped their game considerably in the second half. Wind assisted, St, Brendans managed to claw their way back into the game with many good displays, especially Stephen Lohan, Anthony Geraghty, Kevin Crehan and Kevin Martin who managed to somewhat contain Mullins.

St. Brendans began to dominate and came within 2 points of Monivea. St. Brendans thought they had clinched the game when wing-back Kevin Martin punched in a goal. But, that goal was dissallowed because Martin was deemed to be in the small square (a dubious decision to say the least!). The match seemed to be over after Brendans wasted point-scoring chances by going for goals.

But, in bizzare fashion, St. Brendans somehow got a briallant goal: David Kelly retrieved the ball on the Monivea endline, he then crossed it into the square where Kevin Martin managed to catch it under fierce pressure, he then passed it to Anthony Geraghty who rattled the ball into the back of the net. The lads' delight was evident to all. But, the game wasnt over yet!!! In a nail-biting last minute, Monivea were given a dubious 14-yard free straight in front of the goal, much to the disgust of St. Brendans. It looked as if we were heading for another draw between the sides (They had drawn previously in the league) but unbelievably, Mullins, who had scored many long-range efforts in the game, scuffed the shot; the ball was cleared and finally the ref blew the final whistle much to the delight of St. Brendans.

What a game!!!! Congrats to all invloved.

St. Brendans now play Oughterard in the County League Semi-final. (Keep checking 'Upcoming Fixtures' for details of that fixture.)

Minor Championship:

St. Brendan's  lose to Cartoon Shamrocks

In a truly disappointing affair, the Minors have bowed out of the Championship by losing well to a good Cartoon team. The main difference evident was that Cartoon were training much more frequently than St. Brendans and they were a closer, much more drilled outfit.

Last sunday the 29th May we played a game with the Senior team playing the Junior team over a proper game of 60mins. The Juniors started very brightly and led by 3 points mid way through the first half, however the seniors dominated the second 15mins and eventually led at half time by 1 point.

Whatever happened at half time, the juniors managed to build up a 7 point lead with about 12 mins to go and the game looked all over. However the seniors scored 6 points without reply leaving a point in it with 2 mins left. However try as they did they couldnt get the equaliser and to rub salt into the wound, the juniors scored the insurance point with almost the last kick of the game.

Senior Championship:(1st Round)

St. Brendan's  2-13 Carna-Cashel 1-08

St. Brendan's overcame Carna-Cashel in the first round of the Senior Championship in Pearse Stadium on Sunday. It was a well earned and hard fought victory carved out through hard work and determination. Carna entered the match as favourites but St. Brendan's, playing with a significant wind advantage, did all the early running. However Carna reacted strongly as their half back line continued to run at the Brendan's defense. After some great defensive play especially by Padraic Carty, Dermot Shaugnessy and Tomas Crowe, Brendan's scored some excellent points from play. Pat Cunningham scored a great '45 and midfielder John Ollie Fitzmaurice and wing back Padraic Mannion also got in on the act. During this opening half St. Brendan's scored 1-9 with the goal coming from corner forward Tomas Coyne. Carna scored four points in this opening period but two of those points, in the last minutes of the half, were gained from Brendan's possesion. This left the half time score at 1-9 to 0-4 to Brendan's.

The second half was always going to be a different affair as aided by the strong breeze Carna sought to reel in St. Brendan's. They added three points to their tally within minutes and Brendan's looked to be under severe pressure. But with some excellent free taking from Pat Cunningham, Carna couldn't quite close the gap. Then in the move of the match Martin Hanley, who had an excellent game, ran onto a brilliant pass from Matt Geraghty and finished expertly to the back of the net. This effectively finished off the game as a contest as Carna could see no way back. They did manage to score a consolation goal in the last minutes of the match but Brendan's were always in control. This was an excellent team performance which finished 2-13 to 1-8, as Brendan's ran out worthy winners.

Well done to all involved.

Minor League:

St. Brendan's  3-09 Cartoon 0-10

14-man St. Brendans somehow managed to beat Cartoon in the minor league. Cartoon's inability to score proved decisive in this game as they failed to take any of their 6 or 7 chances straight after half-time. St. Brendans lost Mark Crehan for 2 yellow cards at the start of the 2nd half but still won this game with a bit to spare at the end. Well done to all involved.

However we eventually got into the game and the late scores got us over the winning line. The switch of Alan Nolan proved a decisive one from the management.

U-16 Castlerea Tournament Final :

St. Brendan's  5-05 Dunmore 3-08

The U-16's have brought the first silverware to the club this year in the form of the O'Callaghan Cup. In front of a reasonable crowd, they defeated Dunmore in closely fought match which turned out to be a great spectacle. Dunmore started the better early on and it looked onimous for St. Brendans but a penalty and another goal from David Kelly gave St. Brendans a 3 point lead at half-time. St. Brendans pulled away after the break through 2 more goals from David Kelly and opened up a 7 point lead. But Dunmore to their credit, battled on and levelled up the game with a penalty late-on. Extra-time looked on the cards, but a great pass from subsitute John Mongan found its way to David Quinn who buried it in the back of the net to seal the game for St. Brendans.

Congratulations to all involved. (see "News Desk" for more about the celebrations after this glorious win over a very proud, traditional football area.)

Wednesday, March 30th at Claregalway.

Minor League:(1st Round)

St. Brendan's  0-07 Claregalway 0-06

In very bad underfoot conditions, St. Brendans begin their league campaign on a winning note. In a very low scoring game(which can probably be blamed on the conditions)the lads showed very good grit determination and heart to win this game. There were some great performances from players throughout the team. They kept hassling and pressurising Claregalway which ultimately was the difference.

Team was: S Killilea (Capt.), C Delaney, P Martin, M Crehan, P Giblin, S Doyle, K Martin, T Crowe, N Doyle, E McDonagh, G Noone, M Crehan, P Conboy, A Geraghty, K Booth. (no subs were used)

Tuesday, March 29th at Loughrea.

U-16 League:(1st Round)

St. Brendan's  1-13 Loughrea 3-04

In what can only be described as atrocious conditions, St. Brendans have got their league campaign off to a winning start. The lads played excellently for a lot of the game, considering the water-logged pitch and the constant downpour of rain made playing extremely hard. Two late goals from Loughrea, made for a very nervous last few minutes but the lads managed to scrape through.

Team was: J Walsh, C Delaney, T Shaughnessy, E Fitzmaurice, P Delaney, J Doyle, K Martin, S Lohan (Capt.), J Mongan, K Crehan, A Geraghty, C Greally, L Slyman, D Kelly, D Quinn. Subs used: (D Crehan for E Fitzmaurice, M Doyle for T Shaughnessy)

U-16 Castlerea Cup:

St. Brendan's  3-09 Castlerea 1-08(not exact score)

In front of a good crowd, St. Brendans continue on their winning streak after beating a very competitve Castlerea team. The game was evenly poised at the break, but 2 quick-fire goals for St. Brendans gave them a bit of a cushion which they never gave up. They will now play Dunmore in the final of the Tournament. Best of luck to all involved. Please come out in real numbers to support the team. (keep checking "Upcoming Fixtures" over the next few days, for details of when that final will be played.)

U-16 Castlerea Cup:

St. Brendan's  1-14 Williamstowm 1-03

St. Brendans march on in the Castlerea Tournament in a match which lacked in any real excitement, but that was really down to the poor opposition. A performance in which the team didnt need to push themselves to win. This victory puts the team in the final of the Tournament, with a game to spare.

Congratulations to the lads & the management team of Gus Shaughnessy, Joe Lohan and Michael Lohan, once again. They are on somewhat of a winning streak, lets hope that continues!!! (see "Upcoming Fixtures" for this team's next match in this tournament)
